95% of the time I use my Canon 70D for still photographs. It produces very nice and easy to work with images. The reason I don’t really ever shoot video on this camera is because of the reduced image quality from the compression of this camera. I simply has small dynamic range, has trouble with skin tones, and can produce too noisy of an image at higher ISO’s. However NOW MAGIC LANTERN HAS COME OUT WITH A FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR THE Canon 70D THAT ENABLES YOU TO SHOOT IN RAW UP TO A RESOLUTION OF 1788×1004 WITH A MUCH BETTER DYNAMIC RANGE. This is all done by the passionate and driven team at Magic Lantern who continues to bring us fantastic firmware updates and features for our Canon DSLRs.
Here is a fun little test shot I recorded in my bedroom soon after I installed the firmware update. A low ambient light was in the room- It was pretty dark and the sun was shining directly into the window curtain so the contrast was very evident at the time and I thought (for sure) that the camera would have troubles getting information in both the highlights (sun light coming through) and the shadows (dark room). To my absolute delight it held a fantastic range of information- so well that I could literally color the image anyway I wanted and it didn’t look artificial or like I drew a Crayon over the image.
Pretty stuff…..the future is bright….(for pixels at least) 🙂
Over the summer at Nike Las Vegas 2013 I was the cinematographer for this Nike Design commercial featuring Lebron James. For this project we shot on the Sony FS700 with Zeiss Prime Lenses. What really made my day was I got to draw half of the artwork on the canvas.
